Kannada M.Phil/PhD: Zero admissions even in a new research programme!

JNU has signed an MOU with the government of Karnataka on February 19, 2015 and had agreed to start a research programme under Kannada Chair. According to clause number two – “the thrust area of study will be teaching and research programme in Kannada language, literature and cultural traditions and social institutions.” Prof. Purushothama Bilimale, the Chair Professor, painstakingly prepared a curriculum for an M.Phil./PhD programme under the Kannada Chair over the last year or so, which was approved by JNU’s Academic Council. All he asked for were three seats for admission to the programme, but even these were culled in the admission announcement of 21 March 2017. Can the JNU administration please explain to the Govt of Karnataka why it has violated the Memorandum of Understanding?
