On 24 August 2017, JNUTA submitted a petition to the Parliamentary Committee on OBC Welfare set to meet later that day. The petition draws attention to the failure of OBC reservation in the 2017-18 research degree admissions, and has been supported by Shri Hussain Dalwai, Rajya Sabha MP and a member of the Committee. In this petition, the JNUTA has asked the Committee to:
- Question representatives of MHRD / UGC on effect of UGC regulations, 2016 on intake of students in M.Phil and PhD and particularly affecting availability of sufficient number of reserved seats for OBC students.
- Question representatives from the JNU administration on implementation of reservation policy in admission of students and for teaching and non-teaching staff. Other stakeholders like Teachers Association / Students Union may also be invited for presenting their views before the Committee, not just from JNU, but other Central Universities as well.
- Study the impact of the UGC regulations across all Central Universities and suggest suitable modifications to the MHRD so that there is no negative effect on reservation of OBC students.
