Resolutions Passed in the JNUTA Emergency General Body Meeting of 11 October, 2017

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association, continuing with its stiff resistance to the VC’s autocratic behaviour, condemned in the strongest possible terms the arbitrary and brazen sidelining of 5 senior professors of the School of Social Sciences for the appointment of Dean. This is another example of the VC’s obsession with subverting time-tested conventions, rules and regulations.

A chargesheet against the VC listing seven articles of charges of misconduct against the VC was read out and unanimously adopted.

The JNUTA General Body Meeting resolved to take the following course of future action:

1. A peaceful dharna condemning subverting the principle of appointment of Deans by rotation. The most recent and most brazen instance of this involved sidelining of 5 senior faculty members of School of Social Sciences by the VC in the appointment of the Dean of the School of Social Sciences. The dharna will be organised outside SSS-2 at 11 am on 17 October, 2017.

2. A mass delegation to the VC’s office at 12.00 noon on 17 October, 2017 to serve the chargesheet to the VC. Copies of the chargesheet will also be sent to the Visitor, Chancellor and the MHRD minister, released to the JNU community, as well as provided to the media.

In contrast with the hostile and undemocratic behaviour of the Vice Chancellor, and his refusal to have a dialogue with the JNUTA, the JNUTA will offer an opportunity to the Vice Chancellor to respond and defend himself on the charges mentioned in the chargesheet. Towards this end, the JNUTA will organise public hearings hearings headed by prominent senior academics/ journalists/ judges. and present the chargesheet before them to arrive at a verdict.

The JNUTA appeals to all teachers to participate in these programmes in large numbers and to give them wide publicity. It is our responsibility to protect the University and to thwart the machinations of the VC.
