The JNUTA stands committed in its support for Ms Teesta Setalvad, whose longstanding and indefatigable work in the defence of civil liberties and human rights has made the goal of justice a viable one for the victims of communal violence and state repression. Ms. Setalvad’s activism springs from a deep commitment to the values laid out in the Indian Constitution, and in particular from the sense of fraternity in the democratic society aspired to in the Indian Constitution.
The JNUTA urges all citizens to stand in unwavering support of Ms. Setalvad against the motivated action of the Gujarat police in arresting her, just as she has stood by the victims of communal violence in Gujarat in their struggle for justice. In particular, Ms. Setalvad has been a friend and ardent supporter of various struggles to protect the values enshrined in our Constitution, including by the JNU community at crucial moments in the past.
JNUTA expresses its solidarity with Teesta Setalvad and all others who are being persecuted for upholding and affirming the values of India’s democratic polity against all forms of autocratic oppression. It demands that the FIR filed against supporters of victims of Gujarat violence be withdrawn and that Teesta Setalvad and others, falsely implicated in this case, be immediately released.
